Wednesday Family Nights at Eastport Community Center
Update: With the November celebration for the end of the fall term of the Eastport Girls Club program and a December night of Christmas Crafts, holiday dinner, and a visit from Santa Claus, we closed out the 2008 year on the Wednesday night activities for children living at Eastport Terrace/Harbor House. We will be resuming the program on Wed. Jan. 28th, 2009. If you would like to get involved in these activities, contact jwlawrence2@verizon.net. We look forward to hearing from you!
Beginning in April 2008, several local churches plus members of the ECA and the Annapolitans United Against Crime formed a partnership with the Eastport Terrace and Harbour House communities to explore ways to support a united sense of community. In May, this group began hosting a Family Night every Wednesday evening at the Eastport Community Center on President Street. The ECA Board has agreed to share the responsibility for organizing a Family Night dinner once a month with Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Eastport United Methodist Church, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with each of the organizations rotating as the lead organizer. Other Wednesday night activities include games nights, movie night, an SAT prep course, and a 12-step program. Volunteers play board games with children and serve refreshments and dinner once a month.
In addition to family dinners, other outreach programs are underway. When asked what programs were needed to help young people, a major concern expressed by residents was the need for mentoring young girls. A group of Eastport women stepped up to the plate and formed a group that is mentoring young girls once a week for an 8-week program this summer. The goal of this group is to provide activities and role models for at-risk youth in our community. ECA has committed funds to this program and other mentoring programs slated to start in the fall.
We are planning other activities as we grow this program When school starts, ECA plans to help encourage people to give an hour of their time once a week to help with a homework club that meets Monday-Thursday afternoons. We also need folks who can give a short talk on their chosen profession to a trade skills mentoring group.
If you would like to help with Family Night or tutoring/mentoring activities, please contact either Lee Finney,vicepres@eastportcivic.org, or Jane Lawrence, secretary@eastportcivic.org. You’ll be glad you did.
We look forward to hearing from you!

The 2008 Home and Garden Tour was a huge success. Many thanks to everyone involved in the planning and execution of this wonderful annual event. H&G Tour Chair Phyllis Emmett and her committee did a fantastic job. Thanks to the homeowners who opened their houses and gardens to us and to our sponsors. We raised over $7,000 for our community charities. This was our best year yet. And thanks to all of you who came out to enjoy the beautiful homes.
It is already time to start planning next year’s event, and we are asking for new people to get involved. This event’s success absolutely depends on volunteers. In the coming months we will be looking for volunteers to serve on the Home & Garden Tour committees. The folks who have brought you the tour the last few years can vouch for how much fun serving on the committee has been.
