Wednesday Family Nights at Eastport Community Center
Update: Dinners are now held on the fourth Thursday of each month

Since April 2008, members of ECA and members from four local churches have worked in partnership to explore ways to support a united sense of community with the residents of Eastport Terrace/Harbour House communities. The churches are Eastport United Methodist, Mt. Zion, St. Luke’s, and Unitarian Universalist.

On the 4th Wednesday of each month this group hosts a dinner and activity at the Eastport Community Center on President Street. The ECA and the four churches share the cost and responsibility for producing the dinner…with a lot of help from the children from EPT/HH who regularly attend and love to be involved in serving dinner.  Some of the activities have included a Jeopardy game about African-American inventors, numerous musical and dance performances, crafts, and a 30-ft long letter the adults and children wrote to President Obama. This June 22nd will mark our fourth annual summer kick-off barbecue at the Harbour House pool with swimming, water balloon tosses, great food, and a guest appearance by the Annapolis Drum and Bugle Corp.

In addition to Family Night Dinners, other outreach programs are underway: the very successful Eastport Girls Club, a homework/reading buddy club that meets Monday-Thurs. afternoons, a newly inaugurated Boys Club, and a Dialogue Group. ECA encourages community members to give of their time to extending and building bonds of community in Eastport.

This Spring's dates for Family Night are the 4th Wednesdays of each month.  If you would like to help with Family Night or tutoring/mentoring or have an idea for an outreach activity, please contact either Diane Butler at dianebutler827@aol.com or
Jane Lawrence at jwlawrence2@verizon.net. You’ll be glad you did. We look forward to hearing from you!

The 2008 Home and Garden Tour was a huge success. Many thanks to everyone involved in the planning and execution of this wonderful annual event. H&G Tour Chair Phyllis Emmett and her committee did a fantastic job. Thanks to the homeowners who opened their houses and gardens to us and to our sponsors. We raised over $7,000 for our community charities. This was our best year yet. And thanks to all of you who came out to enjoy the beautiful homes.

It is already time to start planning next year’s event, and we are asking for new people to get involved. This event’s success absolutely depends on volunteers. In the coming months we will be looking for volunteers to serve on the Home & Garden Tour committees. The folks who have brought you the tour the last few years can vouch for how much fun serving on the committee has been.

Read Phyllis Emmett's wrap up report.
